Sundance Camp, Turkey: The Experience

Sundance is one of my favorite memories of Turkey. The energy and atmosphere gives you a feeling of never wanting to leave. My stay at Sundance was during the 8th edition Turkish Juggling Convention. The convention had brought all walks of people to the campgrounds and the feeling of diversity was estimable. The camp felt very organized and generous to the various needs of it’s clients.

When you’re awake…

At Sundance you can enjoy many activities including

  • horseback riding
  • boat excursions to the Phaselis harbour or to the three islands area to do some snorkeling,
  • sea kayaking,
  • thai massages
  • trekking & hiking.

If you don’t want to take the boat ride to get to Phaselis, it’s only a 20 minute walk from the Sundance campground.

Phaselis is an ancient city that has only been excavated on the surface. Therefore, it is still surrounded by forest trees and vegetation. This national park is beautifully located beside the Mediterranean Sea. Interestingly enough the name of the city is said to be derived from the Greek word Phaselos; meaning chickpeas. Besides the remains of the ancient harbours, and city walls, the most impressive feature is an old Roman theatre. Some of these ruins date back as far as 2nd century AD. Walking amongst the ancient ruins makes you think of the people who once lived there and what their everyday lives consisted of.

When you’re sleepy…

Accommodation is an option of, tree houses/lodges, bungalows or camping. We were provided with free camping in exchange for giving circus workshops during the Juggling Convention. Camping was lovely, and the one night it rained we had a giant slumber party in the Yoga Dome. However, if you are wanting something a little more fancy you can try one of their bungalows.

  • The bungalows have their own personal bathrooms with solar-powered hot water. They also include mosquito netting and small porches to relax outside.
  • Tree houses/lodges can fit 2-3 people and are the next step up from camping. Surrounded by pine trees, these little wooden houses simply include a bed (and a small wood burner in the winter). (no personal bathroom, but availability to use the shared bathrooms)
