Olympus (Olimpus), Turkey: The Experience

I visited Olympus twice during my stay in Turkey. The hot sandy beaches provided optimal sea-shell scavenging, and the scenic landscapes were tranquil in consideration.

Somewhere to rest…
The first time, my group and I stayed in tents at an affordable campground called Çirali. It couldn’t have been more than 10TL-15TL a night ($4CAD-$6CAD) for it was very simple; a mattress in a small tent, and some running water. The environment surrounding was what made it lovely. A Mountainous view to one side, and rocky beaches to the other. However, that definitely wasn’t the only campground.

Among the “village” you can find many backpackers guesthouses, treehouses, bungalows and more.

The second time I went I slept in the back of a car parked underneath a tree on the beach. If nothing else; it was memorable.

How to enjoy…

Olympus is now what remains of an ancient Lycian/Roman city.

  • Along the pebbled beaches you will find the scattered remains of Greek ruins and glistening waters; you will most-likely not find shade. In other words; sandals, hat, and sunscreen are a must. If you would like to do some hiking and visit the ruins there is a 5TL ($2CAD) entrance fee, but the view from the top is worth it.

  • Walking along the only surfaced road (recently added in 2009) you will find many quaint camping sites and hostels, small restaurants and unique shops to browse. The “village” has a feeling of once being a haven for hippies, but with the new road, it now attracts all walks of people.

  • Furthermore, an exceptional hike is that which leads to the Eternal Flames of the Chimera. You can take a shuttlebus if you haven’t rented a car to Mount Olympus. On arrival you will find the trailhead. It’s about a 45 minute hike to the top and make sure you bring some means of light, for the trail is dark, windy and steep. Once arriving to the area Yanartas (or “flaming rocks”) you will notice small flames coming out the vents in the rocks. These fires have been burning for thousands of years and with them remains the mythical legend of the Chemira.

The Legend of the Chemira

The dragon-like beast possessed three heads- that of a lioness, a horned goat, and a snake. The creature was thought to be indestructible but was slain by the Greek hero Bellerophon riding Pegasus. The fire that now burns on Mount Olympus in Lycia (now Turkey), was believed to be the breath of the legendary Chemira

What’s really happening is the escape of methane and hydrogen gases from the mountains vents. This is due to the intense geothermal activity in the mountain. Personally, I like the idea that I was standing on top of a fallen three-headed creature better.

Overall?

Olympus was a pleasent place to stay for some decent exploring and lessons in mythology.
