Montreal Boutique & Thrift Store : Danette.andthebee

montreal boutique & thrift store
Our story begins…

Arterie began (and I quote) “by a series of accidents”. Danette started off selling vegan shoes. She found a space in an existing store to set up her vegan shoes, and after time got more and more involved in the store. As time passed, the original store owner moved out, which left the option to Danette to take over. She had already put so much into the store she couldn’t have passed up the opportunity. So from vegan shoes to business owner Danette took over. The world put her where she needed to be and from that was born… Read more

Montreal Locals Boutique : Kristelle.andthebee

montreal locals boutique
Our story begins…

From old friends, to business partners; Kristelle Mercier and Geneviève Paquette explored the idea of putting together their talents to create something positive and new. Kristelle, having previously worked as a manager of a small bistro, had the desire to open her own business and the skills required to operate it. And Geneviève, a designer of her own ethical fashion line, brings imagination and artistic insight to the project. Together they decided to create a space for like-minded local artists to showcase their products, and to provide an accessible opportunity for the community to shop local, and discover local artists. This led to the beginning of… Read more

Montreal Children’s Boutique: Galina.andthebee

montreal children’s boutique
Our story begins…
Galina has lived in the neighbourhood du Plateau-Mont Royal since 2002. She wanted to use her years of experience as a graphic designer to offer a new business on the street. One which combines retail with an artistic vibe. Galina is mother to two young boys, who may also be referred to as The Little Monsters or Les Petits Monstres. And with these two young boys it was brought to her attention that there wasn’t much as far as a children’s boutique in the area. Galina and her brother took the opportunity to offer something unique on the street and in February 2016 they opened to the public. Everything seemed to fall into place and that was seen as a positive sign to Galina; that she had begun a valuable project. Read more

Montreal Hats : Corine.andthebee
Our story begins…

Our protagonist, Corine, took delight in fashioning together accessories for the hair.  She experimented with making them at home; floral headbands, lace veils, clip-on braided headpieces, oh the fun! Besides the enjoyment she got from assembling and creating, she also realized that there wasn’t many people doing this. It soon opened up to her as being a “need” for the general public, and therefore a business. This understanding helped develop hair accessories into hats, and hats into a business. Corine taught herself the art, and 18 years later we arrive to the current time of her story. The story of Corine and… Read more

Montreal Chocolate Shop: Chloé.andthebee

Les Chocolats de Chloé
Our story begins…

Chloé was in her early 20’s when she realized that making chocolate could be a job. An exceptional realization I imagine. She had always loved baking at home, and decided to educate her passion at the pastry school of Montreal. Chloé worked different jobs here and there, but knew she was looking for something more. It was in 2002 when Chloé was working at a bakery in Old Montreal that she had made the decision to start her own business. The support from her community uplifted her to do just that. The owners at the bakery helped her with the paperwork, and her friends at Réservoir Brewery helped her with the renovations. Her first store opened in 2003, and in 2008 she moved to the location she is now. This is the beginning of the delicious little chocolate shop… Read more

Montreal Eco-Responsible Boutique: Catherine.andthebee

Our story begins…

Catherine began her eco-responsible boutique for a simple reason; she wanted to provide the consumer with a means to buying more ecological, and more local. She wanted to stray away from the normal consumerism of large factories and offer an alternative way to enjoy shopping, while still being eco-friendly. She succeeded this at La Mistinguette, providing around 15 artists a place to sell their hand-made products.

maltéhop beer wall montreal verdun local

Montreal Craft Beer Store: Patrick.andthebee

Walking into Maltéhops is like walking aboard an old wooden ship. Wrapped in rustic wooden panels, the hidden remains of pirate bones, old barrels and antique beer bottles set a unique atmosphere. The concept of the store is shown by the impressive painting hung on the wall; a malicious octopus attacking an old ship. This painting symbolizes a story; a story of a battle to bring the beers across the rough waters of the sea. This old-school nautical theme gives the store a great vibe from the entrance to the cash register. Read more

Montreal Artisan Boutique: Josiane.andthebee

Montreal Artisan Boutique: Josiane.andthebee

Our story begins…
Josiane always enjoyed giving old things a second chance. She had a knack for taking something old and making it beautiful again. Her family and friends assured her that her work was wonderful. However, she admitted, family and friends aren’t always the best for feedback. They are easily blinded by compassion. It was the honesty of the public that would reassure her, and that they did.
