I don’t know if I’m the only one who gets anxiety trying to cook, clean, bake and NOT think about how I’m impacting the environment.
Now-a-days it’s normal to plastic-wrap your food, then store it in plastic, cover that in plastic and chuck all of that in a plastic bag with a lovely plastic ribbon to finish it off. AHH! Meanwhile, you’ve got the faucet dumping rivers into your drain as you scrub your dishes with *soon-to-be* landfill sponges and a toxic soap that smells like a paint-can. Alright… I may have dramatized it just a little, but I’ve got to make a point!

So what do you do?? Well, you could become one of those people who finish off a bottle of “cooking” wine in a night. (No judgement to the cooking-wine people, keep doing your thing!). But you could also switch things up a little and start feeling good about your kitchen life and work towards an…

Buy green, save energy & lower your bills. Shop Eartheasy.comLet’s start with some basic tips for your environmentally friendly kitchen; to show the Earth you’re trying.

  • Turn off that faucet! I know you know, but are you doing it? If it’s difficult for you to make it a habit, there are a some options that will help.

    1. Get a “Smart Faucet”. Push the rod to start the flow of water; when rod is released water stops instantly. This still allows the option of the water pressure and temperatures
    2. Get a “Low Flow Faucet Aerator”. This controls the pressure of water that is released.
    3. Get a “Sensor Faucet”. Turns on and off according to sensors.
    4. Get a “Foot Pedal-Activated Faucet”. Control the water with your feet!

  • Start composting! A lot of food is thrown-away, when it could be reused! New to composting? Check out http://howtocompost.org/ to learn more about how to compost.
  • Keep a jug of water in the fridge! They have plenty of water-filtering water jugs on the market. This will help reduce the use of bottled water. But also, it will stop you from leaving your water running as you wait for it to get cold.
  • Invest in a dishwasher. Contrary to some belief, it’s actually a lot more eco-friendly using a dishwasher than washing dishes by hand. It’s presumed to use at least 37% less water. Some ways to make your dishwasher even ‘green-er’ are…

    1. Turning off the heat dry option, and letting your dishes air dry.
    2. Don’t rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher (unless absolutely needed). Most newer dishwashers work well enough that this isn’t necessary anymore.
    3. Wait until your dishwasher is completely full before you run a load.
    4. Invest in an eco-friendly dishwasher. http://dishwashers.reviewed.com/features/eco-friendly-dishwashers

  • Close the refrigerator door! I am SO guilty for this. Sometimes I catch myself staring into the fridge as if I’m going to find the answers of life.
