Montreal Craft Beer Store: Patrick.andthebee

Walking into Maltéhops is like walking aboard an old wooden ship. Wrapped in rustic wooden panels, the hidden remains of pirate bones, old barrels and antique beer bottles set a unique atmosphere. The concept of the store is shown by the impressive painting hung on the wall; a malicious octopus attacking an old ship. This painting symbolizes a story; a story of a battle to bring the beers across the rough waters of the sea. This old-school nautical theme gives the store a great vibe from the entrance to the cash register.

And so it begins…
It wasn’t long ago that Patrick used to drive 20 minutes in to town just to get good craft beer. It wasn’t exactly “readily available” in his neighbourhood Verdun. The general selection was favoured towards the large brewing manufacturers; whereas small microbreweries were left behind.

When the city asked the residents of Verdun what they felt was missing from their main street (Rue. Wellington) Patrick had his idea. He knew he liked good craft beer, and he knew he wanted to open his own store, and with the question in his mind, “What is our neighbourhood missing?” Patrick had his answer. This is the beginning of the unique craft beer store- Maltéhops.

So what can you find in his shop?
You guessed it; beer! A whole lot of awesome “Quebecer” beer. From the classic Unibroue to the unique Microbrewery Du Lac Saint-Jean to the delicious La Chouape. This store has a huge selection of craft brews to satisfy all your beer-needs. Here’s a quick list of just SOME of the microbrews you can find in the shop

The list goes on and on and on. If you want to keep up-to-date with what beer Maltéhops is bringing in- “Like” their Facebook page here.

, Maltéhops is proud to be a large supporter of the microbrewery Beau’s; coming from Quebec’s next-door-neighbour Ontario. Beau’s is a much-loved organic and eco-friendly brewing company. This is a difficult beer to find in Montreal and Maltéhops has an awesome selection.

And if you’re like me; you might need some munchies with your beverage. They’ve got those too. Chips, cookies, crackers, jams, and a wicked selection of hot sauces.

Plus! Check out these sweet locally-made syrups/sirops and bitters!

Maltéhops 1671? Regardless of the detailed wooden shelves, ship models and old-school music; the store did not open in 1671. In fact, that year was the foundation of Verdun (the neighbourhood where Maltéhops is found).

Why supporting local is important to him…
Patrick believes that when you support local, you are supporting someone you know. You are supporting their job and what’s better than that? Opening his own small business has inspired Patrick to support others. What used to be a simple trip to Gaspésie (a region of Quebec), is now an exciting way to discover new breweries and brewpubs; to meet people with the same field of interests. Patrick makes a point of visiting those local businesses to support the local jobs of local people.

“If you could have a coffee with anyone (living or dead) who would it be and why?”

“Elvis Presley . Every time I listen to Elvis Presley, I smile. When I am in busy traffic, I just put Elvis on the stereo and it calms me down. He is the king of the undead. You know? Many people think he’s still alive somewhere; so for that, he is the king of the undead. And the king of rock and roll. But, I wouldn’t take a coffee with him, I’d take a beer.”
