Montreal Children’s Boutique: Galina.andthebee

montreal children’s boutique
Our story begins…
Galina has lived in the neighbourhood du Plateau-Mont Royal since 2002. She wanted to use her years of experience as a graphic designer to offer a new business on the street. One which combines retail with an artistic vibe. Galina is mother to two young boys, who may also be referred to as The Little Monsters or Les Petits Monstres. And with these two young boys it was brought to her attention that there wasn’t much as far as a children’s boutique in the area. Galina and her brother took the opportunity to offer something unique on the street and in February 2016 they opened to the public. Everything seemed to fall into place and that was seen as a positive sign to Galina; that she had begun a valuable project.

So what can you find in the shop?

It’s important to Galina to offer, not only quality and affordable products, but also a place for parents to take a moment to relax and enjoy. There is a small play area for the kids to sit and colour, and a wall filled with their artistic masterpieces. And while the kids are doodling, Galina will gladly start up a conversation with the parents. This is the welcoming vibe that I received, and that the customers receive at Les Petits Monstres.

You will find a range of items for children of ages 0 – 12.

  • Clothing
  • Bibs
  • Shoes & socks
  • Belts, hats & accessories
  • Tutu’s
  • Body-care (organic, biodegradable, etc.)
  • Nightmare spray
  • Lamps
  • Reusable sandwich bags
  • And more!

Les Petits Monstres has a modest second-hand section as well. The clothing has been well checked over to insure it’s still of good quality.

Another great idea from the boutique are these adorable Baby Souvenir Boxes.
The description reads

Keep all the memories of your baby in this pretty box.
Their first bracelet,
Their first hair,
The newspaper of the day of their birth,
A copy of the birth announcement,
their first slippers”

Fill the box with your favorite items from the children’s boutique Les Petits Monstres!

Why is supporting local important to her?

Galina believes it’s important to provide a choice to consumers. A choice that if they don’t want to support large superstores that they have another option. And by supporting local you not only support the economy of the community, but the identity as well. Galina truly believes that Montreal is a creative and inspiring place, and it brings an identity to the city by sharing these artistic talents. It is a nourishing thing when you encourage your neighbours, and people tend to feel proud and overjoyed when they know they are supporting local.

Les Petits Monstres has a variety of all sorts-of products, and this includes a large section of the store dedicated to “Made-in Quebec” items. You will commonly find “Fabriqué au Québec” signs all over the store indicating these locally-made items.

“If you could have a coffee/beer with anyone (living or dead) who would it be and why?”

The Dalai Lama. I would like to talk to him… Do you know the story of the hummingbird? It comes from a Native American tale. There is a big fire in the jungle and everybody escapes except the little hummingbird. He takes a little bit of water and puts it on the fire, and takes a little bit more and puts it on the fire. And everybody, like the giraffe and the elephant say “what are you doing?”, and the hummingbird says “I’m doing my part.” And so everybody started to do it, and they put out the fire. So, like the hummingbird, I have to do my part. It doesn’t matter how small my part is, it’s still a part.”

I’m in the UK and this shop is AMAZING! So many kids shops don’t cater to actual kids so the chalkboard is a fab idea x
