Montreal Boutique
Our story begins…
After working in events, Evelyne got a first-hand view of the difficulty that comes with getting noticed as a designer. This inspired her into wanting to help get the designers to the public, and the public to the designers. Evelyne went into wholesale to try and make this possible, and many of the designers she had met from doing events asked her to sell their items. She said yes. It wasn’t until a couple years back when Evelyne was asked to fill in a few shifts for a friend over at Boutique Général 54, a local boutique that supports a ton of local artists. Evelyne loved the job but was much too used to working for herself to become an employee. After the talk of opening a second Boutique Général 54 with her friend and store owner Jennifer, the timing just wasn’t right, so Evelyne decided to give it a shot on her own. And now, just celebrating their one-year anniversary, we have…

Montreal Boutique
So what can you find in the shop?
What surprised me the most was the space of the shop. Open and bright, lots of windows, and put together beautifully to create a wonderful atmosphere. You will find approximately 88 different artists around the store, and 84 of those artists happen to be Canadian. Evelyn made a few exceptions for some out of town companies to have their place, as long as they work with good ethics and provide quality items. Towels hand loomed in Turkey and sleepwear from the States are some examples.

Why is supporting local important to her?
When Evelyn was in university she did an internship working for a small designer. She saw the investment poured into the creations and got first-hand experience on how hard they work. And with all that hard work, came very little exposure. This frustrated her, and she began to realize how important her everyday purchases are. She believes in the importance of supporting these hardworking people who are doing their best to provide locally made (and ethically made) items. After watching many documentaries about what goes on behind the scenes of these large corporations, she made the decision not to support bad working conditions.
There is a spirit within something that is handmade by a person trying to live their dream, and do good. That spirit should be nourished and supported.
“If you could have a coffee/beer with anyone (living or dead) who would it be and why?”
“Mick Jagger. I love Mick Jagger. I think he’s so cool. I’m not a hippy, but he has a free spirit, he lives the way he wants, and he’s super hot doing it. He’s like 70-whatever and he’s still rocking. So just hanging out with him would be a dream.”
