Montreal Artisan Boutique: Josiane.andthebee

Our story begins…
Josiane always enjoyed giving old things a second chance. She had a knack for taking something old and making it beautiful again. Her family and friends assured her that her work was wonderful. However, she admitted, family and friends aren’t always the best for feedback. They are easily blinded by compassion. It was the honesty of the public that would reassure her, and that they did. Josiane was very successful selling her refurbished furniture in the Montreal summer markets. As a result she received requests for special orders. And soon afterwards came the boutique. When Josiane found an empty space in her own neighbourhood of Verdun, she could’t resist. What a perfect way for her to do what she loves. And from then forth, BrockArt began.

So what can you find in her Boutique of Curiosities?

A little bit of everything. Josiane herself refurbishes old furniture and lamps. In addition, she supports around 30 artists, all of those coming from Montreal, and 50% of those coming from her own neighbourhood Verdun. Pottery, soap, clothing, prints, jewellery, art and more. Plus, a second-hand “friperie” section. Josiane does her best to show off the amazing talent that lives close to her. She gives them an opportunity to expand and share their passions.

BONUS!
Josiane connects Verdun artists with their clients, fans and followers. She organizes workshops right in the boutique. So if you’re wondering how the artist made that multi-coloured apron you bought, keep an eye on the shop because the artist might just be giving a class. There are classes from macrame to soap-making to learning how to repaint furniture with chalk-paint. Check up with their Facebook page, or stop into the boutique to see when the next workshop will be!

What supporting local means to her
For Josiane, supporting local is an obvious way of thinking and should be a natural way of life. She believes there are so many talented people with so much potential and it’s our duty as neighbours to give each other the opportunity to grow. Buying something that’s been made by hand locally gives it a special authenticity and creates a connection between humans.

“If you could have a coffee with anyone (living or dead) who would it be and why?”

“Oh! Good question… hmm… who did you choose?”
 Josiane caught me off-guard by throwing the question back at me, in which i was forced to truthfully say;
“I never actually thought about it. I was so interested in thinking what others might say, I didn’t think of what I might say”
Josiane then chose;
John Muir. He was one of the founders of the environmental movement in the U.S. He created many National Parks and the idea behind the importance of National Parks in the United States. And because in my day-to-day I am always environmentally conscious, that’s what is inspiring me to do what I do with recycled material. He is one of the greatest environmentalists. So, for sure, I would take time with him; chat with him.”
