How to Find Locals So You Can Support Locals.

So you’re on the road, you’ve been cruising and it’s time to eat! One problem, you’re sick of going to the same chain restaurants and supporting the same big companies. Your heart believes in supporting locally but sometimes it’s just hard to find the small local businesses.

I’ve come up with 5 different tips on how to find locals.

  1. My favorite (and only used) online shopping website, Etsy!

Etsy has a shop local portion of their website that will help you find artisans in the area. It will also keep you updated on any Etsy markets that are happening near you. Check out some of my favorite Etsy items from previous posts 1. 2. 3.

  2. Online Farmers Market Locator

There are tons of online websites to help you find a farmers market near you. Whether you are in the States, Canada, or somewhere else!

  3. Visit the Local Information Centre

Most towns have an information center, help desk, or town hall. There will be lots of information provided by these spots.

  4. Try hashtags!

Before entering a town or city, try out some hashtags on your favorite social media site. Some examples are: #LocalToronto, #SupportLocalLA, #ShopLocalMontreal, #EatLocalBoulder, #KelownaLocal, #RotterdamLocalMarket, etc. etc. Likely the artisans will have a fan page that they keep up to date, and you’ll be able to find them easily!

  5. More Online Shops for Artisans!

  • Extra Tip!

Book your stay with Airbnb. Airbnb (for the large majority) are locals who are trying to make extra income by hosting travellers. This is a very inexpensive and intimate way to travel. When I’m on the road I always check AirBnB before I look at hostels, hotels or anything else really. It’s so fun to stay in these unique places with real people who can help you experience in the location better through their insider tips.

Every town, city, and village have local businesses, artisans, entrepreneurs, and crafters. It may take more time to find these people, but it’s always worth it. Homemade recipes designed with taste in mind, handmade items built with passion, and unique treasures with unique stories are always worth the extra effort. Interacting with locals and supporting their jobs is what builds communities, and creates stories.

I live in Arizona and am always trying to eat and shop locally! I’m glad there are many other people that are doing the same.

I am starting a new series on my blog (it’s barely like a month old), but I would love to have you featured in one of my guest posts! Let me know, jlizette@thecupofjojo.com.

Wow you have a really beautiful site. And these are some really good tips. Although I’m afraid not all of them would apply in small countries like Slovenia. The thing here is that everyone knows everyone and simply don’t advertise their products and services online. And if you don’t know where to find what you are looking for you have a problem. For example, when we want fresh produce we simply drive to the closest farm and buy it there.

I love that! The beauties of living in a smaller country… More and more we are starting to see urban farms which is so helpful to citizens without vehicles to have access to local fresh food.

Glad you enjoyed Veronika! Thanks for commenting.
