How to be environmentally friendly: A Lazy Person’s Guide

I get it, you want to be environmentally friendly. You’d love to be that person who wakes up at 4am to promote their “Save the Anteaters” campaign. Marching down the streets with a handmade 100% recycled bamboo protest sign reading, “I LOVE MOTHER EARTH, DO YOU!?” But, you’d also love to be a hibernating bear who only wakes up to eat cold pizza that just-so-happens to be on the floor beside your bed. Is there no middle ground? Well I believe there is!

Here are a few environmentally friendly ideas that will make a difference and won’t take a lot of effort.

  • Switch out your lightbulbs. This is a quick task with a long benefit. Change to Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFL) to save up to 75% more energy than regular bulbs. They may cost a little extra at first, but they actually last about 10 times as long as an incandescent bulb.
  • Wash your clothes with cold water. This task is done by just a click of a button! Did you know about 90% of the energy used in a washing machine is for heating the water?
  • Skip the straw! Straws suck…. *pun intended* … But they do! When you’re eating out make sure you mention “no straw” when you order your drink. However, if a straw is a must for you, check out these reusable ones from Etsy. Throw one in your purse or backpack for an emergency.

  • Dry your hair with air! It rhymes so it makes sense. It takes no effort to do (you could literally stare at a wall…), and green living expert Sarah Snow says, “reducing drying time by even 5 minutes a day saves almost 45 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year”.
  • Reusable bags! Just throw some in your backpack or car and forget about them until need be.

  • Hitch a ride. So lazy you don’t even want to drive to work? Perfect! Start a carpool and get others to drive you to your locations so you can focus on not-focusing. There are tons of online carpooling websites as well, just search “Carpool + The Name of Your City” and something might come up!
  • Shop enviro-wisely from your bed! Online shopping makes it a lot easier to get some environmentally friendly necessities that may not be offered in local stores. It also reduces the carbon emissions from having to drive around store-to-store trying to find everything!

These are great! I live in Los Angeles so I’m forced to do the reusable bags and I never dry my hair because I am lazy and don’t have time but skipping straws never occurred to me.

That’s awesome, you already have a great start! Yah after I saw a video of a poor sea turtle with a plastic straw up it’s nose, I’ve completely stayed away from them! I’ve just purchased a stainless steel reusable straw that I use for my morning smoothies and I love it!

Great ideas! I’ve been lazy about the straws, but I just might have to invest in some more reusable ones. Are the stainless steel straws hard to clean? That’s my main hesitation. Also, your readers could look into making their own bags if they want. The no-sew t-shirt bags are super easy!

Thanks! I have a stainless steel one that I got from Etsy and it came with a little straw cleaner that makes it super easy to clean. You’re right! I was thinking about doing another version of this blog post but with recycled materials!
